Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Direct Routing

Direct Routing serves as Microsoft’s original Bring Your Own Carrier (BYOC) solution for Teams, offering all the advantages of connecting directly to a carrier along with Teams’ feature-rich platform. Key benefits of Direct Routing include:
1. Enhanced communication flexibility: Direct Routing empowers enterprises with control over Direct Inward Dialing (DID) numbers, IVR, call routing, call recording, and location settings.

2. Migration management: With precise oversight of your numbers and on-premise equipment, Direct Routing provides a structured, disruption-free migration path. You have the option to transition your communication stack to the cloud and host your SBC with your Direct Routing provider or maintain on-premise equipment for added control.

3. Global connectivity: If your business requires PSTN connectivity in more than the approximately 16 countries where Calling Plans are currently available, your Direct Routing partner can extend coverage to all regions where you have customers and employees.

4. Expedited support access: Unlike purchasing wholesale PSTN connectivity via Teams Calling Plans, Direct Routing grants you direct access to your provider’s support, network operations, and number management teams.

To establish Direct Routing connection to the PSTN for voice and emergency services, enterprises require:
1. A Microsoft Teams Phone System license within Microsoft 365. This is commonly bundled in the E5 package and available as an add-on for E3 subscriptions.

2. A Direct Routing provider offering SIP trunks and certified E911 services for Microsoft Teams. Bandwidth is among the three certified E911 providers for Microsoft.

3. A Microsoft-certified Session Border Controller (SBC) for terminating SIP Trunks.

4. Trained IT personnel capable of configuring and overseeing your Microsoft Teams connectivity.

A Microsoft SBC serves as the bridge between your Microsoft Teams users and your Direct Routing provider. Without an SBC, there wouldn’t be a means to transmit media and voice between devices via the PSTN. Apart from terminating SIP trunks, the SBC serves as your voice firewall. Regardless of whether you decide to use your SBC or not, Microsoft Teams routes calls to the SBC, which then directs them to the PSTN or emergency services provider via IP-based SIP trunks.
