Operator Connect FAQs

Everything you need to know about Operator Connect

Operator Connect is a Bring Your Own Carrier PSTN connectivity option, providing Microsoft Teams users access to voice services, including emergency calls. It enables employees to initiate calls from directly from Microsoft Teams, facilitating communication with employees, customers, and vendors.

Operator Connect gives organizations an intuitive, yet flexible, way to manage PSTN connectivity. Main benefits of Operator Connect include:

Fast Setup
Voice, phone numbers, and 911 are procured and managed directly from the Microsoft Teams Admin Center. Operator Connect does not necessitate PowerShell proficiency for setup.

Support SLAs
Every Operator Connect provider undergoes approval by Microsoft Teams, enabling access to shared Support-Level Agreements (SLAs) and direct support from the provider’s team.

Pure Cloud Connectivity As a hosted connectivity model, Operator Connect enables a transition to a purely cloud-based setup, eliminating the need for legacy systems like SBCs. This translates to reduced time spent maintaining on-premises equipment and increased savings in the cloud.

Global Accessibility

Global connectivity is achievable—regardless of the locations of your customers or employees. Limited Calling Plans need not impede your operations.

Vendor Freedom
You retain the option to continue working with your existing connectivity contractors or explore new operators that align with your coverage and support requirements.

For users to activate phone number assignments via Operator Connect, they must hold Microsoft Teams Phone licenses and be in TeamsOnly mode. Additionally, a Microsoft-certified Operator and E911 provider are necessary.
After completion of the above, users can proceed to make a selection and activate their Operator from the Microsoft Teams Admin Center.

Previously known as Operator Connect Mobile, Teams Phone enables organizations to furnish employees with one phone number and voicemail for use across company-provided mobile phones, desk phones, and Microsoft Teams. This offering is limited to specific carriers.

Operator Connect and Direct Routing serve as PSTN connectivity models for Microsoft Teams. While Direct Routing allows for greater provider flexibility, Operator Connect offers a curated selection of pre-approved providers, operates purely in the cloud, and provides shared support SLAs with Microsoft.

Furthermore, Operator Connect simplifies management and deployment, requiring no PowerShell expertise and enabling centralized user management via the Teams Admin Portal.

Follow these steps to activiate Operator Connect in Microsoft Teams:

  • Enable your operator. Navigate to the All Operators tab, select your preferred Operator and countries for Microsoft Teams integration, provide your contact information, accept the data transfer notice, and save your selection by choosing “Add as my operator.”
  • Configure numbers. When a new user needs a phone number, access your Operator to assign/aquire numbers. Should you be transferring existing numbers from Calling Plans or Direct Routing to Operator Connect, you’ll have to port the phone numbers to your new Operator.
  • Assign emergency addresses. Establish emergency addresses in the Teams admin center and link them to the relevant phone numbers to manage dynamic emergency calling and ensure compliance with regulations like the RAY BAUM’s Act.
